Who Composed the Champions League Anthem?

Tony Britten is the composer of the Champions League anthem. The British composer is a graduate of the Royal College of Music who has also composed music for Mole’s Christmas in 1994.

In 1992, he was requested to compose a piece in the style of the famous 18th-century musician George Frederic Handel. Handel has already composed an anthem to be traditionally performed at the coronation of the British Monarchs, which is widely called as ‘Zadok the Priest’.

In a 2013 interview, Britten said the following:

… HOOLIGANISM WAS A MAJOR, MAJOR PROBLEM AND UEFA WANTED TO TAKE THE GAME INTO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AREA ALTOGETHER. THERE’S A RISING STRING PHASE WHICH I PINCHED FROM HANDEL AND THEN I WROTE MY OWN TUNE. IT HAS A KIND OF HANDELIAN FEEL TO IT BUT I LIKE TO THINK IT’S NOT A TOTAL RIP-OFF.

When is the Champions League Anthem Played?

When the commencing date of the UEFA Champions League is announced and the fixtures are fixed, the crowd with loads of anticipation look forward to the events to take place. The anthem is played before the beginning of every UEFA Champions League match that builds up the hope of the crowd. It is also played at the end of every Champions League game.

The anthem’s chorus is tuned in as the two teams enter the field and are lined up for the match. The television broadcasters of the matches include the tuning in of the anthem before each match and end the live coverage with the anthem being played.

The Champion League Finals has heard special vocal versions of the anthem performed live with the lyrics being sung in other languages which change in accordance with the host country’s language for the chorus.

During the 2013 Champions League final at the Wembley Stadium, the chorus of the anthem was played twice. An instrumental version of the anthem’s chorus was introduced in 2018 by 2Cellos.

Britten told UEFA.tv of the composition, “The idea of the Champions League was to make the game beautiful again and the music had to reflect this quality”, and he succeeded in doing it.
