The Madrid Open which is played on the clay court is the part of the WTA’s the Premier Mandatory category. The event is held since 2002 and from 2009 onwards women’s competition became a part of it.
The first female player to win the Madrid Open is Dinara Safina who won the 2009 edition of the tournament. She won the trophy by defeating Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). The 2019 Mutua Madrid Open is scheduled to take place between 6th May and 14th May.
Madrid Open 2018 Winner
The reigning champion of the tournament is Czech player Petra Kvitova. She won the 2018 Madrid Open Women’s title in the Singles category by defeating Kiki Bertens with a score of 7–6, 4–6, 6–3. This is her third title in the tournament with the other two titles having won in 2015 and 2011.
Who has won the Most Titles in Women’s Singles?
Since the inception of the Madrid Open tournament in 2009, 7 players have lifted the trophy and three players have won the title more than once. The most successful player of the tournament is the Petra Kvitova who has won the trophy 3 times.
Two other players have won the title twice – Simona Halep and Serena Williams. Whereas Maria Sharapova, Aravane Rezai, and Dinara Safina have won the title once each. Serena Williams was the first tennis player to win back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. Followed by Serena, Simona Halep won two titles in a row in 2016 and 2017.
